The Canvas on Broadway

The Canvas on Broadway was a social painting studio in Columbia, Missouri that is women-owned and celebrated its 10th birthday in 2022. For this occasion I was hired to create a new website and logo refresh.

This website update presented interesting challenges in two ways. First, the website contained a great deal of information that needed to be organized and presented in a way that was easily scannable, but gave thorough enough answers to questions that customers may have so that they can appropriately plan for a session.

Second, the website is primarily a means for customers to sign up for events, so the site must have an active and clickable schedule that can be easily updated and managed by employees.

I do most of my website design on Squarespace, which afforded good tools for this. Optimizing this scheduling backend setup for the studio manager saved her hours each month in terms of posting the class schedules, managing sign-ups and helping coordinate that information with other employees.

Moving a business from a 10+ year old set of web hosting services also presented its own (sometimes hilarious) challenges, but ultimately bringing a new set of tools to help simplify processes for this great local business was a deeply satisfying project that I’m proud of. You can see the new site above, with images from the older site below for comparison.

This project also afforded me the opportunity to develop a brief website backend instructional manual for the client. I’m always happy to spend a few hours teaching the client how to navigate their new website and make updates on their own if they would like to. This client requested some documentation as well, so I made a number of screen shots to add to a “how to” manual that could be used by the manager or given to employees.
